Is Shoulderstand Safe?

Is Shoulderstand Safe?
Architecture and Energy Create a Pose

By Dr. Jeremy Brook

Model: Jo Tastula, Yoga Instructor

Evaluating the benefit of any asana (posture) is best done with holistic eyes. With correct alignment, or the use of appropriate variations, the inversion of the body in sarvangasana, or shoulderstand, can be energetically profound, even generating a shift in consciousness, which is why this asana is so beloved. While venerated, it is also hotly debated regarding its safety.

Too many injuries occur as a result of people practicing asana (posture) incongruent with their physical architecture and body-mind type. When assessing the suitability of any asana, it is important to consider the individual yogi's makeup as well as the pose itself from the interrelated energetic and biomechanical viewpoints.

In shoulderstand, the bulk of the body's weight is placed on a delicate part of the vertebral column, the cervico-thoracic junction, the connection point between the base of the neck and the rest of the spine. When practiced incorrectly or by a person with a compromised cervical spine, it can be painful or problematic.

Energy Flow in Shoulderstand

In a normal spine, we have four curves: cervical, thoracic, lumbar and sacral/coccygeal. In shoulderstand these curves are reduced for a faster transmission of energy, since prana (our essential life-force) travels more efficiently with a straight spine.

Engaging the three bandhas, or energetic-physical locks, in shoulderstand encourages flow of prana. Activating mula bandha, the root lock, occurs by drawing up the muscles of the perineum and anal sphincter; by nature this reduces the lumbar curve. Uddiyana bandha (uddiyana means flying upward) refers to the upward movement of the abdominal muscles and certainly creates an awesome lift, accentuating the action of mula bandha. The application of jalandara bandha, or throat lock, by tucking the chin in toward the chest, reverses the cervical curve into a flexed position.

The combination of engaging the bandhas and reducing the curves, although supportive for prana, can be over-emphasized biomechanically, even to the point of being detrimental, depending on the person and the situation.

Anatomy of a Pose

Anatomically, the cervical spine is in flexion and the thoracic spine is placed in a slightly extended position assisted by extension and external rotation of the humerus, or upper arm bone. The scapulae, or shoulder blades, retract mildly, further allowing the sternum to draw closer to the chin. To practice shoulderstand effectively, the entire body weight is ideally supported on the outer shoulder, triceps and elbows.

Shoulderstand Pitfalls

As a chiropractor, the problem I have with shoulderstand relates to most people's habitual patterns, injuries and structural imbalances. Many people sit at a desk for hours, collapse on their sofa and sleep on their stomachs. While this example is extreme, most modern bodies are far different from those of the ancient yogi who practiced asana hours each day, meditated, read sacred texts and slept on a hard straw bed. Thus, a modern practitioner may possess the same spirit, but in a body with a far different, and likely compromised, neck.

In many people, the natural cervical curve may be missing, reversed, their discs may be degenerated or head jutted forward. In these circumstances, people have an inordinate amount of stress on discs, facet joints of the vertebral column and the nerves originating from the spinal cord. Even in an tasasana (mountain pose), this may be painful. Additionally, the average person has experienced at least one, if not more than one, car accident or other injuries, compounding stress in the spine.

The Inner View of Compression

The discs between the cervical vertebrae are not well-equipped to handle stress when weight is loaded on them, and in shoulderstand, their integrity can be compromised. In fact, a flexed position with compression causes the nucleus pulposis, inner part of disc, to bulge out and backward toward the outside of the disc, the annulus fibrosis. A bulging annulus can irritate the spinal nerves or spinal cord, potentially resulting in radiating pain into the shoulders, arms and hands. If that happens, one's asana practice, and life for that matter, can become challenging.

Modifying Shoulderstand

In cases of cervical disc degeneration or flattened or reversed spinal curves, modifications of sarvangasana may be necessary. Work with a qualified and experienced teacher or practitioner.

Half-shoulderstand is one option where the weight of your lower body rests on your hands or a block. You'll form three angles in this position rather than two, to relieve pressure from the neck.

In another variation, the use of blankets in full shoulderstand can help elevate the shoulders and take pressure off the neck, although this may not be effective for everyone.

If none of these options create stability, evaluate the appropriateness of any variation of shoulderstand.

To maintain an injury-free practice, customize your asana to match your body and mind for creating stability and ease. Self-study of your body is vital; learn your limitations, know your strengths and then move slowly and skillfully to find the practice venerated by the sages.

Dr. Jeremy Brook is a chiropractor and yoga teacher who practices in Los Angeles and teaches the anatomy of yoga. Spinechecker.com.

To read the online version, go to.......
http://layogamagazine.com/issue37/departments/shoulderstand.htm

In order to experience TRUE HEALTH, one must have wisdom.

A wise person is always learning and asking new questions.

Below are 4 questions created by Dr. James Chestnut of The Wellness Practice that one should meditate and contemplate on.

1. How does the subluxation complex decrease health and vitality and quality of life and how does it increase susceptibility to disease and the accelerated aging process?

2. How does a specific scientific chiropractic adjustment increase health and vitality and quality of life and decrease susceptibility to disease and the accelerated aging process?

3. What lifestyle choices decrease health and vitality and quality of life and increase susceptibility to disease and the accelerated aging process?

4. What lifestyle choices are necessary to increase health and vitality and quality of life and decrease susceptibility to disease and the accelerated aging process?

Get to work...I'm excited to hear of your answers!

At no time in the human experience are there more vital developments than in the periods before, during and after pregnancy. The mother's physiological, psychological, and spiritual state can't be overstated enough in the process of that transforms 2 cells into a trillion of interweaving cells that will ultimate become a beautiful new baby. Being in an optimal "state of being" will allow the mother to be the best opportunity for a more comfortable pregnancy and give her new baby the essential ingredients required for an outstanding journey.

When caring for a pregnant woman, the Chiropractor has 2 main objectives, Structural and Neurological Integrity. The Structural component consists of symmetrical alignment (or as close to it as possible) and proper movement. The Neurological component consists of a free flow of nerve impulses, human electricity, or prana to all cells of the body without interference. Optimal Structural and Neurological integrity leads to an increase in global physiological & psychological health, which allows for a supreme internal environment for the mother, the growing baby, and the supportive partner.

Creating a more flexible body, especially the region of the spine and pelvis, is crucial for a successful pregnancy. By creating an outer body amour that is malleable is extremely helpful due to the amazing changes that will be occurring in the body. Ideally, the mother-to-be's spine should be subluxation-free before conception. A Subluxation is a term used to describe what happens when a spinal bone, or bones, misaligns and causes pressure or irritation to be placed on the nerve. This is detrimental to one's health process because the nervous system is the information super highway that allows for all communication and development to happen. That means all previous injuries should be "cleaned up" before pregnancy...of course in an ideal world. That means weeks or months of adjustments to get the body moving without restriction and stabilized.

Once the spine is stabilized and holding its shape should the mother-to-be consider getting pregnant. With a freely moving spine the mother-to-be is able to handle the increase in 20-30 lbs that she will be carrying. This is a matter of gravity and biomechanics.

On a neurological level... the body works better with a healthy nerve supply. That means removing any irritation to the nervous system. The irritation can be in the form of traumas, toxins, and bad thoughts. When enough stress builds up, the spine being the closet structure to the nervous system distorts, and contains the stress at that level.

The chiropractor's job is to create motion in the spine where the tension and distortion has developed, thereby taking pressure off the nerve tissue and allowing for proper nerve transmission. The job of the mother is to maintain that free and open pathway through a holistic body mind-training regimen.

With a healthy nerve flow to all the tissues of the body, the mother gives herself the greatest opportunity for wellness and vitality. When vitality exists, the environment for conception is ripe!

Once conception and implantation has occurred will the value of chiropractic reveal itself. The mother-to-be will usually experience range of fatigue due to the new physiological demands put forth by the new tissue. "Morning sickness" characterized by vomiting and nausea hypothesized to be caused by an increase in human chorionicgonadotropin produced by the placenta.

Since chiropractic is largely interested in the relationship between the spine and the main energy system, the nervous system, specific scientific chiropractic adjustments to the spine can help the mother overcome a decrease in energy levels.

As the pregnancy advances, breast tissue becomes larger as does the size of the belly. To help ease the changes in the biomechanics, in terms of weight distribution, specific scientific chiropractic adjustments to the distorted and misaligned spine will help the mother-to-be adapt to the increase in stress on her spine and body. The goal is to make the mother-to-be be as comfortable as possible and keep her emotions in check. By staying out of pain from jammed and compressed joints, emotional volatility and fatigue are reduced. This alone brings great harmony to the growing embryo and most importantly to the ultra-supportive husband!

Usually the lumbar spine, pubis and sacroiliac joints are the first to succumb to the increase in weight demands. As the abdominal region extends forward, the center of gravity changes and the mother-to-be is forced to make adaptative changes to her posture. By making sure the pelvis and sacrum are moving freely the mother-to-be will have more freedom to move. By having more freedom she is able to move more often and exercise based on her ability and comfort level.

Another vitally important reason for chiropractic care is due to in-utero constraints. After the 7th month, and throughout the final trimester, any position of the fetus other than a vertical head down position is considered to create constraint to the fetus and make it especially uncomfortable for the mother! The biomechanical constraints on the fetus and the potential for a more challenging labor, or even the need for heroic surgical procedures, all point toward chiropractic care as being not just helpful, but essential.

Birth is hard enough. Specific chiropractic adjustments allow the bones to move, the muscles to relax, and the nerve impulses to flow without interference. Conception, pregnancy, and delivery are a sacred time in one's life and Chiropractic honors this period. So try Chiropractic...chances are you'll move better, think better, and feel better!

For the first time in history, man is able to scientifically prove what the ancient disciplines taught in their sacred books about improving concentration and decreasing stress. The key to overall physical and mental health lies with the spine!

You may not have even realized that your yoga practice may be the single most important thing you do for the health of your body and mind.

As Yoga Sutra 1.2 says, "Yoga is the mastery of the activities of the mind-field" or yoga is about controlling the fluctuations of the mind." But how do we go about this?

Phenomenal research by Dr. Jeremy Schmahmann, PhD., has shown how yoga and other healing movement disciplines such as chiropractic are vital for those striving to achieve total health. His work has shown that movement of the spine stimulates a part of the brain, the cerebellum, responsible for coordinating full body movement, thought, feelings, emotions and organ/ immune function.

Specialized receptors located in the joints of the spine, called proprioceptors, get fired when you move the spine, sending a message to the brain.

So what is a proprioceptor? It is a nerve cell found in muscles, tendons and joint capsules which gives information concerning movements, position and alignment of the body. The highest concentration of proprioceptors in the body is in the spine, with the greatest amount being clustered in the upper cervical spine.

When a joint moves, the brain wants to know if the movement was healthy or not. This is huge when you realize that healthy movement of the spine is like ROCKET FUEL for your brain. All those sun salutations are doing just as much for your mind as they're doing for your body!

Now, when joints slam or jam into each other, proprioceptors don't fire. Rather, noiceiceptors, or noxious stimulation receptors, get activated and the stress response is triggered. Your fight or flight response is not triggered by a wooly mammoth or saber-toothed tiger, but by a stuck, jammed, or misaligned joint. Believe it or not your jammed joints create the same physiological response as being put into a fight or flight situation. Your heart rate quickens, your cardiac output increases, there's a flood of adrenaline, cortisol, and insulin and a laundry list of other negative responses. That's all from a headstand or upward facing dog gone badly or hours slouched over a computer. Who knew?

Removing irritation or noxious stimulation from your spine with a dose of smooth, slow and steady movements will decrease your stress response and allow for a positive integration of your thoughts, feelings and emotions.

Yoga evolved from being a secluded meditative practice in which the yogi's asana arsenal consisted of a comfortable sitting pose, to a complicated system of movement and breath. The yogi's of old knew that if they could minimize the noxious/ noiciceptive input into and within the brain they would be able to decrease the stress response and go deeper into their meditative states. They somehow figured this out without expensive MRI's!

Healthy movement can exponentially improve your physiology and psychology just like Patanjali said. That's why yoga is supreme when it comes to exercising your muscles and your mind. It provides the brain with the most essential nutrient for survival....MOVEMENT OF THE SPINE!

With a peaceful mind and strong body, we are able to enjoy life to the fullest and evolve to greater heights.

If we can continue to evolve mentally, physically and spiritually, then maybe we can usher in a new revolution....THE WELLNESS REVOLUTION! A revolution based on attaining maximum health, healing and wholeness.

http://www.spinechecker.com/

spinechecker@yahoo.com

Chiropractic is good for the heart?" The proof, however, is in the stethoscope!!!!

Whether or not you have symptoms or a positive tests, you need to find out if your atlas is in it's normal position before it's too late, deadly, and in need of the medical model.

The atlas is the top bone in the spine upon which your skull rests. When you do your Funky Chicken exercises your skull glides on this bone. When you shake your head "NO" your atlas rotates on the bone below, the axis-C2.

When the atlas gets stuck it causes interference to the nervous system, specifically to your BRAIN STEM! All you have to do is do a google search on the brain stem and see how important that area is for FULL BODY FUNCTION! That is why it is vital to get adjusted and keep your joints gliding....not degenerating...thereby allowing your nervous system to function at it's natural level.

For those under Chiropractic care ..... this is truly exciting when you realize that getting adjusted isn't just good for your joints....it's good for your heart..your lungs...your liver...your life! You get the point!

A retrospective study of 2,818 patients in the USA and worldwide demonstrates that Chiropractic is associated with statistically significant, profound, and consistent improvement in self reported health and wellness issues (provided below). A demographic analysis of the retrospective study (conducted between November, 1994 and April, 1995) demonstrates that Chiropractic targets highly motivated individuals interested in alternative and complimentary care, and vitalistic or holistic care.

Less Stress relative to
emotional well being, health, general well being, coping with daily problems, family, significant relationships, work

More Life Enjoyment
openness to guidance by inner feelings, experience of relaxation, well being, positive feelings about self, interest in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, feeling open when relating to others, confidence in dealing with adversity, compassion for others

Improved Physical Well Being
Improved flexibility of the spine, more energy, less fatigue, fewer colds and flu, fewer headaches, and reduced pain

Greater Emotional and Psychological Well Being
positive feelings about self, decreased moodiness, temper, angry outbursts, less depression, more interest in life, fewer concerns about small things, improved ability to think and concentrate, less anxiety and concern over vague fears, improved ability to stay on task, less distress about physical pain

Spontaneous Positive Life Style Changes
regular exercise, Tai Chi/Yoga, meditation/self hypnosis, health foods/vitamins, vegetarian/partial vegetarian, less use of prescription medications

Overall Improvement in Quality of Life
improvement relative to: personal life, oneself, extent one adapts to change, handling of problems in life, actual life accomplishments, life as a whole, overall contentment with life, significant other, job, life being what one wanted it to be, romantic life, actual work done, co-workers, physical appearance

*Conducted within the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology, College of Medicine, U. of C., Irvine, CA
*****UC Irvine is Dr. Brook's Alma Mater*****

Chiropractic, Bruce Lee, and the Refinement of the Nervous System

It is not often that one finds Bruce Lee and chiropractic in the same sentence, but after reading an essay from Bruce's classic The Tao of Jeet Kune Do, titled "The Importance of Coordination" the connection between the two was crystal clear.

In his essay Bruce dives into the different components essential for pure coordination as well as the importance of refining the nervous system. A master in the martial arts, Bruce was highly qualified to write on this topic. In fact he sounded as if he were a doctor of chiropractic stressing the importance of owning a nervous system clear of interference.
Bruce states, "Muscles have no power to guide themselves, but the manner in which they act and consequently, the effectiveness of their performances, depend absolutely how the nervous system guides them." Being that we live in a culture that gives more importance to how our outsides look rather than how the insides work, one could gain new insight into the inner workings of our body from this statement. Simply put, the nerves deliver a message from the brain down the cord out the nerves to the muscles and give it the power to move. Without proper nerve supply the muscles are useless. They are in fact flesh and meat that becomes animated when activated by our "inner net" or nervous system. Bruce was a master of his art who knew how to train his nervous system and harness its power to achieve physical mastery.

In order for one to achieve optimum command of their physical body, it is essential that one understand how their inner wiring is laid out. For it is the inner wiring that is responsible for the transmission of human electricity to every muscle, organ, gland, blood vessel, and cell in the body. Without healthy wiring, or nerves, the body becomes weak and lifeless. Thus one's coordination is affected resulting in inappropriate reflexes, diminished timing or speed, and imprecise accuracy. That's where chiropractic fits in. Chiropractic is a discipline that concerns itself with the clearing and refinement of the nerve system and the spinal bones that protect it.

With a clear nerve system one is able to enjoy a body that is communicating properly with itself. From the brain, the seed and source of the nerve system, down the spinal cord, the most important information superhighway known to mankind, out through the nerves, and to the muscle, flows healing energy, prana, chi, or innate force. The connection should be a clear one. A clean one without interference.

Bruce says, "... learning coordination is a matter of training the nervous system and not a question of training muscles. The transition from totally uncoordinated muscular effort to skill is the highest perfection is a process of developing the connections in the nerve system." If one desires peak physical performance then a sound nerve system is the foundation. The result... a fresh body capable of executing pure power and razor sharp coordination. So clear your system!

AVOID SLEEPING ON YOUR STOMACH
It twists your neck and puts stress on your brain stem (Houston Control).

STRETCH EVERY MORNING AFTER GETTING OUT OF BED
It gives your spine strength and flexibility. Try Sun Salutations to begin your day.

LEARN AND PRACTICE A BREATHING TECHNIQUE
A simple but powerful example: in a comfortable seated position, breathe in through your nose and breathe out through your mouth. Count 30 full breaths with attention on the space between the inhalation and exhalation.

KEEP YOU WALLET OUT OF YOUR BACK POCKET
Especially when sitting or driving. It torques the foundation of your spine.

DRINK AT LEAST 1O GLASSES OF SPRING WATER EVERYDAY
Hydrate every cell in your body. I love TRINITRY water!

AVOID DRUGS
Including alcohol, sugar, cigarettes, and sugar.

TAKE A WALK AFTER DINNER
It aids digestion.

BEGIN A EXERCISE ROUTINE
Invigorate your body physically. Motion is life. Your body was created for movement.

CULTIVATE A MEDIATION PRACTIVE
Hundreds of scientific studies show that the effects of meditation can be profound.

GET ADJUSTED BY YOUR FAVORITE CHIROPRACTOR
Specific adjustments to your spine and nervous system enables you to have a free flow of communication between your brain and body. The net result is optimal health.

Health Care or Sick Care...Your Choice.

We spend more on health care than any other nation, yet Americans endure some of the poorest health of any developed nation. This is because we don't have a health care system, we have a disease care system.

Scientists estimate over 70% of disease is preventable, yet the emphasis on prevention and wellness is minimal.

However there has been a shift in consciousness in which people are beginning to nurture their bodies with love, respect, and restraint.

Maintenance, prevention, and wellness care have become common household terms. And now Los Angeles has a home where people can strengthen their outer structure that protects their inner works.

It is called The Life Center and it is just that. It is a center that is life oriented with an emphasis on human performance, healing, and vitality and enables one to achieve optimal health through a path...Pure traditional Chiropractic and Yoga!

So you have a choice, because life is about making choices. You have a choice to be healthy or unhealthy. To act or react. To move or stand still. To listen or ignore. To feel more or not feel at all. To regenerate or degenerate. To be conscious or unconscious. To live with ease or dis-ease. You have a choice to stand straight, take in a breath, and be alive. You have a choice to connect or reconnect or be disconnected.

But the choice can only come from one place...the inside. And can express itself on the outside. Because that is how we heal... from the inside out.

Why the Spine?

So......why do chiropractors focus on the spine, and what does the spine have to do with innate intelligence and fulfilling your potential in life?

Well, as it turns out, a lot. The spine is made up of 24 bones which cover and protect your 'communication superhighway' - the spinal cord. It is via this neural network that your innate intelligence informs and coordinates the delicate dance which we call life.

Your chiropractor strives to optimise your spinal and nervous system function so that you can accurately interpret, and then appropriately respond to your life's calling. In pursuing this purpose your chiropractor uses natural, safe, and carefully administered techniques structured and individualized to your personal physiology. If you are already health conscious you will be aware of the important role of many aspects of the chiropractic lifestyle.

You will likely know that regular exercise, a good diet, minimizing stress and maintaining a balanced mental attitude are all important for achieving and sustaining your best. You should also know about that important part of the equation upon which all others depend.......the nervous system. The nervous system is the master control system to all cells, tissues and organs in the body.

The health and proper function of your spine is essential to this system. The other components of the chiropractic lifestyle are obviously best pursued when spinal and nervous system function are at their best.

In order to customize the right techinique for each person I studied with several chiropractic masters. The list below is a brief explanation of the techniques I will use to adjust and correct one's subluxations.

If you have any questions about any of the techniques I use, feel free to contact me any time.

Upper Cervical Specific Technique- HIO --
A specific adjustment of the upper cervical spine... the upper part of the neck, closest to the brain. This technique utilizes a side posture table with a cervical head piece which makes a slight drop when the adjustment is given.

PALMER METHOD
This will involve any of a number of specific adjusting techniques, such as full spine, gonstead, & HIO, with the addition of a philosophy which emphasizes the role of the Innate Intelligence of the body in the healing process. It will not utilize any therapy other than hand adjustment.

YOGA
Ancient principles of linking movement with breath are utilized at The Life Center Chiropractic. Specific scientific sequences are prescribed to normilize and maximize spinal motion in a full range of motion based on the person's unique individual design.

THOMPSON
A specific technique for adjustment of the full spine on a special table which has a slight drop in the cushions to improve the effectiveness of the adjustment without as much force into the patient.

GONSTEAD
A specific method for full spine adjusting utilizing the use of full spine x-rays to locate spinal mis-alignments.

MLTTS
Developed by my mentor Dr. Arno Burnier. It is an advanced technique that involves visulization, motion palpation, and advanced delicate adjusting.

MOTION ANALYSIS (PALPATION)
An examination procedure used to test the mobility of spinal joints by feeling for movement between the vertebra.

ACTIVATOR
It is a small had held impact tool in which a quick impulse is applied to correct a vertebral mis-alignment according to a set pattern.

LOGAN
A non-force technique taught by Logan Chiropractic College, which utilizes a soft steady pressure on ligaments around the tail bone for release of tension and vertebral mis-alignments in the lower back.
