Motion is Lotion

Posted on Apr 13th, 2007 by Dr. J : Spinechecker Dr. J
It should be obvious why it is so important to ensure every child has a properly moving and aligned spine as the spinal joints are the main source of sensory movement stimulation to the brain. If there is subluxation in the spine, movement and therefore essential nutrient delivery to the brain are compromised.

The upper neck has been found to be particularly important to examine because it is the most easily damaged (birth trauma, falls, poor sleeping postures) and it has by far the most movement receptors to stimulate the brain.

These findings have been confirmed by clinical studies performed by both chiropractors and medical doctors. In fact after examining thousands of children one medical researcher concluded that "observations of motor development and manual control of the occipito-atlanto-axial (upper neck) joint complex should be obligatory after every difficult birth". He also states that the upper neck "should be examined and, if required, specifically adjusted … (as) the success of adjustment overshadows every other type of treatment." Of course it does, a specific adjustment is the ONLY way to correct a subluxation!!!

As chiropractors we are all very familiar with this type of work and have all personally seen great results with the care we provide to children.

The problem is that much of society is unaware of the pathogenic potential of subluxation and far too many children are suffering needlessly.

I recommend combining specific adjustments with some sound nutritional advice and some fun yoga exercises to ensure that each child gets the best possible chance to have a healthy body and mind.

Not only does proper spinal movement increase overall health, decrease dis-ease and improve the ability to create feelings of happiness and well-being, it also helps to reduce pain and discomfort and to diminish feelings of anxiety and stress.

When it comes right down to it we are creatures designed for virtually constant movement living in a society that involves almost constant sitting. We are also clearly designed to have properly moving and aligned spines and many of our citizens are unknowingly walking around with subluxation in their spines because they have NEVER HAD A SPINAL HEALTH EXAM!! This is not a healthy combination and the result is that we have a population that is much less healthy and much more sick, tired, and dis-ease ridden than is necessary.

Please get yourselves and the children out and moving around. Everyone will feel better, think better, have a healthier spine, have increased overall health, and enjoy a much greater quality of life. All children (and adults of course) deserve a wonderful quality of life and proper spinal movement is an integral part of this. Motion is lotion, movement is life, and chiropractic delivers so get out there and get those spines moving!!!!

Yogic Spinal Hygiene

Posted on Apr 14th, 2007 by Dr. J : Spinechecker Dr. J
A healthy spine is undoubtedly the center point to the physical aspect of a fluid yoga practice. From a chiropractic perspective, the spine is like a musical instrument. When kept in fine-tuned condition, this basic instrument of the human experience can orchestrate a pleasurable, balanced and sweet-toned symphony.

Recently, at a sitting with Nishat Khan, the sitar virtuoso, he related a story of how at a performance he paused for a moment before playing a raga. The audience automatically burst into applause. He told us that in fact he was merely tuning his sitar - a complicated guitar-like instrument. However, his audience thought he had just completed a song. He went on to tell us that is take several minutes to re-tune his sitar in between songs. He explained that the sitar is an extremely complex instrument containing several parts and four joints. As a result he has to retune it after every song.

As a chiropractor I immediately thought of the spine - the central and very complex human instrument consisting of twenty four spinal bones, twenty three discs, one hundred and thirty four joints. The spine makes up nature's most powerful and intricate architectural masterpiece. I thought about how this channel or conduit of our prana, also needs constant attention and fine tuning to allow the free flow of life force to flow through it. The state of the spine determines the state of vibration - or music - of its owner.

Although the spine is built for protection, flexibility, locomotion, respiration, it is also the means for achieving super conscious states of being - a means to tap into the inside - through this fortress of light. This light or life force (or prana, or chi) uses the nervous system to transmit life to every cell in the body. The nervous system consists of 72,000 nerve channels with the most essential, the spinal cord, or shusumna nadi, flowing down the middle. The spine is the medium to contact the Central Nerve System. Any dysfunction of the spine will lead to distortion of the nerve system. This distortion in the physical system creates a situation where the body is unable to integrate the experience.  It creates tension and the music begins to play out of key.

That is why spinal hygiene is so vital for the yoga practioner. There are plenty of opportunities for our spine to misalign and go out of key simply by our daily use of it. Thus the innate need to retune it...realign it...recalibrate it.

The concept of yogic spinal hygiene is similar to dental hygiene. Consider the analogy of forcing a backbend in a yoga class. It is what biting down on a hard candy is to the teeth. As routine dental care preserves the teeth for healthy ongoing use, in bending the spine forward and backward, side to side and then twist to each side....delicately, the same care is accomplished with this essential instrument of well being. With this understanding, the yogi's practice might begin with an activation phase...focusing entirely on lubricating the joints. After all, the goal of the yogi is to properly move the body within a prescribed natural boundary designated by their only innate genetic architecture, not what the person in front of them can do.

Some yogis push their spine to the extreme. The result is usually a straining/ spraining effect of the spine and its related structures. The solution is to eradicate the irritation of the deranged joints, remove pressure of the strangulated nerves, decrease the spasmodic contraction of the muscles which would result in pure harmonious movement of the joints, optimal tone/ tension of the muscles, and a free flow of nerve energy to every cell in the body. Once all the joints are lubed up, the next element could be to engage in their normal standard hatha practice.

Chiropractic along with yoga are essentials to tuning the instrument on a structural and energetic level. Both provide the essential ingredients for a healthy spine...movement. Without movement, or with trauma, the spine degenerates and can interfere with the transmission of life music.

The solution is to unlock the spinal bones in a specific and scientific manner, like an activation/ lube-up phase (or a chiropractic adjustment) and then move with intelligence so the energy gets deposited in the right places and in the right concentrations.

Unlike a beautiful string instrument, we are dealing with a living structure. The integrity of our spine is of supreme importance to our life expression. If we activate our spines in a prescribed sequential order, it will not only be great for the integrity of our entire physiology, but it will make our yoga practice more malleable, stronger and  perhaps most importantly.... more fun.

See you at the concert!

Standing Tall

LA YOGA MAGAZINE

Check out his article written about chiropractic and yoga by Felicia Tomasko from LA Yoga Ayurveda & Health Magazine

Our upright spine is one of the hallmarks of our human body, and one for which an owner's manual might be welcome. Yoga practice and the science of chiropractic have the potential to serve as that missing manual. Both methodologies are focused on the idiosyncracies of the spine and how to maintain the optimal alignment, health and well-being of this crucial living structure.

Los Angeles chiropractor and yoga therapist Dr. Jeremy Brook describes the two methodologies as being virtual brothers and sisters. Both address alignment, structural integrity and the nervous system from the perspectives of physical, psychological and spiritual wellness.

Integrating the two disciplines, a number of chiropractic doctors practice or teach yoga themselves, and even present information on the spine and its mechanics at yoga teacher and therapist training programs. Dr. Brook is one example of a teaching chiropractor, enlightening yogis and teachers as to the anatomical and energetic nature of human anatomy and physiology, including the spine.

Few chiropractic colleges offer yoga, which would be a helpful addition to their programs. Dr. Brook reports that he studied yoga on his own, partially in an effort to recover from rugby injuries. He found the two came together naturally. Because of this natural affinity, interest in yoga by chiropractic colleges is increasing. Dr. Rick Morris, who contributes his expertise to the yoga therapy program at Loyola Marymount University, has developed a yoga video geared toward chiropractic students.

Although yoga is much more than simply moving the body, in the physical realm, both yoga and chiropractic science share similar goals of maintaining mobility of bones, joints, muscles and especially the spine. To accomplish this, the two practices can work together to create harmony in the body-mind. There are times when a yoga practice or even a therapeutic application may not be enough to adjust a fixated, out of alignment or immovable segment of a joint, including the multifaceted joints of the vertebral column. At least, not so the change takes hold. In these situations, a skilled chiropractic adjustment can set things right and realign bones and joints.

In this fashion, Dr. Brook sees chiropractic adjustment as a precursor to yoga. Working with a skilled chiropractor can help unlock a specific bone that's stuck and jammed, can realign the spine and can help the body move with intelligence. For maintaining that intelligence on a day-to-day basis, yoga reigns supreme, says Dr. Brook.

A chiropractic adjustment often needs to be accompanied by postural corrections, mind-body education and changes in habitual patterns for a lasting effect. While chiropractors frequently employ visualization and other mind-body techniques to assist an adjustment, Dr. Rick Morris admits to the limitations of a chiropractor, particularly in their available time for physical reeducation. "Not all chiropractors have an hour to spend with you." Additionally, a chiropractor's knowledge of yoga varies widely. Some doctors, such as Jeremy Brook, have enough expertise to suggest poses and practices. Dr. Morris suggests that other doctors would do well to partner with an experienced yoga teacher or therapist to provide an educational supplement for an expert adjustment.

"Life is a constant vinyasa."

Along these lines, there are times when yoga practice should be avoided or curtailed when working with a chiropractor. According to Dr. Morris, these situations occur primarily in the acute phase of an injury, which is generally during an injury's initial few weeks. A person might not be ready for yoga classes that offer a full range of postures until some healing and adjustment takes place. A restorative practice may be an exception and expert guidance to choose the most appropriate practice is critical.

Dr. Morris cites one of the benefits of an appropriate yoga practice as being the relaxation and focus obtained when coordinating breath and movement. Since the vertebral column, the skeletal structure of the spine, interfaces with the nervous system, breath affects physiology and psychology. Breath also influences the subtle or energetic body through the movement of prana.

Prana in Sanskrit means both breath and life force. In yoga, the spine is the conduit for the movement of prana through the nadis, or subtle channels of the body. Prana is often coordinated with our human electrical currents. Misalignments in the physical structure can interfere with this flow and the associated movement of prana. Dr. Brook muses that the spine is a precious instrument, one that enjoys greater longevity with careful playing.

"Life is a constant vinyasa," says Dr. Brook. We are always sequencing from one movement to another, from the moment we get out of bed, as we flow through the activities of our day. Vinyasa with grace, accompanied by a sense of unimpeded and painless movement is essential to live joyfully and well in our bodies.

Flu Season Wellness Plan Should Include Chiropractic

Posted on Apr 14th, 2007 by Dr. J : Spinechecker Dr. J
The World Chiropractic Alliance (WCA) is recommending that people of all ages add chiropractic to their strategy for warding off and fighting the flu and its effects this season.

Spinal adjustments can have a positive effect on immune function, the WCA asserts, citing a growing number of researchers who are exploring the common denominators in disease processes, and the role of the nervous, immune, and hormonal systems in development of immune related illnesses.

Chiropractic corrects spinal abnormalities called vertebral subluxations that result in interference of the nervous system by placing pressure on nerves. Since the nervous system controls all functions of the body ?? including the immune system ?? chiropractic care can have a positive effect on immune function, WCA officials note.

"Contemporary research is beginning to shed light on the neurobiological mechanisms which may explain the outstanding clinical results chiropractors have experienced when managing patients with viral and infectious diseases," stated Dr. Christopher Kent, WCA Vice President.

Dr. Kent explained: "A comprehensive review of the research literature reveals the current understanding that the brain and immune system are the two major adaptive systems in the body. During an immune response, the brain and the immune system 'talk to each other' and this process is essential for maintaining homeostasis or balance in the body."

Since its inception, chiropractic has asserted that viruses and microbes don't threaten us all equally and that a healthy immune system easily repels most invaders. The immune system protects us from the flu, as well as any other infectious disease, and strives to get us well again when we do fall ill. Our immune system, like every other system in the body, is coordinated and controlled by the nervous system.

Chiropractors are also aware of the importance of positive health life style practices (rest, drinking ample quantities of water, diet, exercise, proper food choices, use of high potency multivitamins and minerals, and stress reduction approaches) that can also positively influence the nervous system and immune response. According to a large study of the chiropractic profession recently conducted by the Institute for Social Research, Ohio Northern University (McDonald et al., 2003), chiropractors also customarily advise their patients as to the benefits of these other modalities in optimizing overall body function.

Chiropractors helping patients battle the flu is not a new occurrence either. During the 1917?18 influenza epidemic, which brought death and fear to many Americans, it has been estimated that 20 million people died throughout the world, including about 500,000 Americans. It was chiropractic's success in caring for flu victims that led to the profession's licensure in many states.

Researchers reported that in Davenport, Iowa, out of the 93,590 patients treated by medical doctors, there were 6,116 deaths ?? a loss of one patient out of every 15. Chiropractors at the Palmer School of Chiropractic adjusted 1,635 cases, with only one death. Outside Davenport, chiropractors in Iowa cared for 4,735 cases with only six deaths ?? one out of 866. During the same epidemic, in Oklahoma, out of 3,490 flu patients under chiropractic care, there were only seven deaths. Furthermore, chiropractors were called in 233 cases given up as lost after medical treatment, and reportedly saved all but 25. In another report covering 4,193 cases by 213 chiropractors 4,104 showed complete recovery.

"These results are not so surprising given what we now know about the interaction between the nervous system and the immune system" stated Dr. Matthew McCoy, WCA Board member and Editor of the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research. "Through research we know that chiropractic has beneficial effects on immunoglobulins, B?lymphocytes (white blood cells), pulmonary function and other immune system processes."

One such study, conducted by Patricia Brennan Ph.D and her team, found that when a chiropractic "manipulation" was applied to the middle back, the response of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (white blood cells) taken from blood collected 15 minutes after the manipulation was significantly higher than blood collected 15 minutes before and 30 and 45 minutes after the chiropractic procedure. This research demonstrated an "enhanced respiratory burst" following the chiropractic adjustment. This "burst" is needed for our immune cells to destroy invading viruses and bacteria.

Another small study of HIV positive patients was conducted to study the effects of specific chiropractic adjustments to correct vertebral subluxations in the upper neck on the immune systems of HIV positive individuals. Over the six?month period of the study, the group that did not receive chiropractic care experienced a 7.96% decrease in CD4 cell counts, while the adjusted group experienced a 48% increase in CD4 cell counts over the same period.

A large retrospective study conducted by Dr. Robert Blanks and colleagues studied 2,818 individuals undergoing chiropractic care. These individuals reported an average overall improvement, ranging from 7?28%, in a battery of physical symptoms including stiffness/lack of flexibility in the spine, physical pain, fatigue, incidence of colds and flu, headaches, menstrual discomfort, gastrointestinal disorders, allergies, dizziness and falls (Blanks et al., 1997, Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research).

More importantly, the incidence of colds and flu was reduced by an average of 15% in this large population who were undergoing regular chiropractic care.

According to Dr. Terry Rondberg, president of the World Chiropractic Alliance, "While we would love to say we (chiropractors) figured this out, the truth is we didn't. We simply take advantage of it to help our patients."

He added that, "In many ways this is old news since the relationship between the nervous system and the immune system was reported by the New York Times in 1993. According to that article 'Scientists have found the first evidence of an anatomical connection between the nervous system and the immune system. Nerve cell endings in the skin and white blood cells of the immune system are in intimate contact, and chemicals secreted by the nerves can shut down immune system cells nearby.' Our health care system needs to catch up with the research."

"I would recommend to any person concerned about the upcoming flu season to add chiropractic to their list of things to do to remove interference to their nervous system, enhance their immune function and give their body every extra bit of security it needs" stated Dr. Rondberg.

The World Chiropractic Alliance (WCA), an international organization representing doctors of chiropractic. WCA promotes the traditional, drug?free and non?invasive form of chiropractic as a means of correcting vertebral subluxations that cause nerve interference. The WCA is a NGO (Non?Governmental Organization) associated with the United Nations Department of Public Information.

Bruce Lee Technique

Posted on Apr 14th, 2007 by Dr. J : Spinechecker Dr. J
In order to customize the right techinique for each person I studied with several chiropractic masters. The list below is a brief explanation of the techniques I will use to adjust and correct one's subluxations.

If you have any questions about any of the techniques I use, feel free to contact me any time.

Upper Cervical Specific Technique- HIO --
A specific adjustment of the upper cervical spine... the upper part of the neck, closest to the brain. This technique utilizes a side posture table with a cervical head piece which makes a slight drop when the adjustment is given.

PALMER METHOD
This will involve any of a number of specific adjusting techniques, such as full spine, gonstead, & HIO, with the addition of a philosophy which emphasizes the role of the Innate Intelligence of the body in the healing process. It will not utilize any therapy other than hand adjustment.

YOGA
Ancient principles of linking movement with breath are utilized at The Life Center Chiropractic. Specific scientific sequences are prescribed to normilize and maximize spinal motion in a full range of motion based on the person's unique individual design.

THOMPSON
A specific technique for adjustment of the full spine on a special table which has a slight drop in the cushions to improve the effectiveness of the adjustment without as much force into the patient.

GONSTEAD
A specific method for full spine adjusting utilizing the use of full spine x-rays to locate spinal mis-alignments.

MLTTS
Developed by my mentor Dr. Arno Burnier. It is an advanced technique that involves visulization, motion palpation, and advanced delicate adjusting.

MOTION ANALYSIS (PALPATION)
An examination procedure used to test the mobility of spinal joints by feeling for movement between the vertebra.

ACTIVATOR
It is a small had held impact tool in which a quick impulse is applied to correct a vertebral mis-alignment according to a set pattern.

LOGAN
A non-force technique taught by Logan Chiropractic College, which utilizes a soft steady pressure on ligaments around the tail bone for release of tension and vertebral mis-alignments in the lower back.

Why the Spine?

Posted on Apr 14th, 2007 by Dr. J : Spinechecker Dr. J
So......why do chiropractors focus on the spine, and what does the spine have to do with innate intelligence and fulfilling your potential in life?

Well, as it turns out, a lot. The spine is made up of 24 bones which cover and protect your 'communication superhighway' - the spinal cord. It is via this neural network that your innate intelligence informs and coordinates the delicate dance which we call life.

Your chiropractor strives to optimise your spinal and nervous system function so that you can accurately interpret, and then appropriately respond to your life's calling. In pursuing this purpose your chiropractor uses natural, safe, and carefully administered techniques structured and individualized to your personal physiology. If you are already health conscious you will be aware of the important role of many aspects of the chiropractic lifestyle.

You will likely know that regular exercise, a good diet, minimizing stress and maintaining a balanced mental attitude are all important for achieving and sustaining your best. You should also know about that important part of the equation upon which all others depend.......the nervous system. The nervous system is the master control system to all cells, tissues and organs in the body.

The health and proper function of your spine is essential to this system. The other components of the chiropractic lifestyle are obviously best pursued when spinal and nervous system function are at their best.

Health Care or Sick Care...Your Choice.

Posted on Apr 14th, 2007 by Dr. J : Spinechecker Dr. J
We spend more on health care than any other nation, yet Americans endure some of the poorest health of any developed nation. This is because we don't have a health care system, we have a disease care system.

Scientists estimate over 70% of disease is preventable, yet the emphasis on prevention and wellness is minimal.

However there has been a shift in consciousness in which people are beginning to nurture their bodies with love, respect, and restraint.

Maintenance, prevention, and wellness care have become common household terms. And now Los Angeles has a home where people can strengthen their outer structure that protects their inner works.

It is called The Life Center and it is just that. It is a center that is life oriented with an emphasis on human performance, healing, and vitality and enables one to achieve optimal health through a path...Pure traditional Chiropractic and Yoga!

So you have a choice, because life is about making choices. You have a choice to be healthy or unhealthy. To act or react. To move or stand still. To listen or ignore. To feel more or not feel at all. To regenerate or degenerate. To be conscious or unconscious. To live with ease or dis-ease. You have a choice to stand straight, take in a breath, and be alive. You have a choice to connect or reconnect or be disconnected.

But the choice can only come from one place...the inside. And can express itself on the outside. Because that is how we heal... from the inside out.

Chiropractic, Bruce Lee, and the Refinement of the Nervous System

Posted on Apr 14th, 2007 by Dr. J : Spinechecker Dr. J
It is not often that one finds Bruce Lee and chiropractic in the same sentence, but after reading an essay from Bruce's classic The Tao of Jeet Kune Do, titled "The Importance of Coordination" the connection between the two was crystal clear.

In his essay Bruce dives into the different components essential for pure coordination as well as the importance of refining the nervous system. A master in the martial arts, Bruce was highly qualified to write on this topic. In fact he sounded as if he were a doctor of chiropractic stressing the importance of owning a nervous system clear of interference.
Bruce states, "Muscles have no power to guide themselves, but the manner in which they act and consequently, the effectiveness of their performances, depend absolutely how the nervous system guides them." Being that we live in a culture that gives more importance to how our outsides look rather than how the insides work, one could gain new insight into the inner workings of our body from this statement. Simply put, the nerves deliver a message from the brain down the cord out the nerves to the muscles and give it the power to move. Without proper nerve supply the muscles are useless. They are in fact flesh and meat that becomes animated when activated by our "inner net" or nervous system. Bruce was a master of his art who knew how to train his nervous system and harness its power to achieve physical mastery.

In order for one to achieve optimum command of their physical body, it is essential that one understand how their inner wiring is laid out. For it is the inner wiring that is responsible for the transmission of human electricity to every muscle, organ, gland, blood vessel, and cell in the body. Without healthy wiring, or nerves, the body becomes weak and lifeless. Thus one's coordination is affected resulting in inappropriate reflexes, diminished timing or speed, and imprecise accuracy. That's where chiropractic fits in. Chiropractic is a discipline that concerns itself with the clearing and refinement of the nerve system and the spinal bones that protect it.

With a clear nerve system one is able to enjoy a body that is communicating properly with itself. From the brain, the seed and source of the nerve system, down the spinal cord, the most important information superhighway known to mankind, out through the nerves, and to the muscle, flows healing energy, prana, chi, or innate force. The connection should be a clear one. A clean one without interference.

Bruce says, "... learning coordination is a matter of training the nervous system and not a question of training muscles. The transition from totally uncoordinated muscular effort to skill is the highest perfection is a process of developing the connections in the nerve system." If one desires peak physical performance then a sound nerve system is the foundation. The result... a fresh body capable of executing pure power and razor sharp coordination. So clear your system!

Chiropractic Cuts Blood Pressure!

Posted on Apr 14th, 2007 by Dr. J : Spinechecker Dr. J
Chiropractic Adjustment to the Atlas Cuts Blood Pressure

Study Finds Special 'Atlas Adjustment' Lowers Blood Pressure

For the entire article go here.

With millions of people getting amazing results and research project after research project backing the findings, Chiropractic finally gets it's props on the #1 medical web site in the world.

Tens of millions will give this response after reading this research article, "I didn't believe it. Chiropractic is good for the heart?" The proof, however, is in the stethoscope!!!!

Whether or not you have symptoms or a positive tests, you need to find out if your atlas is in it's normal position before it's too late, deadly, and in need of the medical model.

The atlas is the top bone in the spine upon which your skull rests. When you do your Funky Chicken exercises your skull glides on this bone. When you shake your head "NO" your atlas rotates on the bone below, the axis-C2.

When the atlas gets stuck it causes interference to the nervous system, specifically to your BRAIN STEM! All you have to do is do a google search on the brain stem and see how important that area is for FULL BODY FUNCTION! That is why it is vital to get adjusted and keep your joints gliding....not degenerating...thereby allowing your nervous system to function at it's natural level.

For those under Chiropractic care ..... this is truly exciting when you realize that getting adjusted isn't just good for your joints....it's good for your heart..your lungs...your liver...your life! You get the point!

Movement Rules!

Posted on Apr 14th, 2007 by Dr. J : Spinechecker Dr. J
For the first time in history, man is able to scientifically prove what the ancient disciplines taught in their sacred books about improving concentration and decreasing stress.  The key to overall physical and mental health lies with the spine!

You may not have even realized that your yoga practice may be the single most important thing you do for the health of your body and mind.

As Yoga Sutra 1.2 says, "Yoga is the mastery of the activities of the mind-field" or yoga is about controlling the fluctuations of the mind." But how do we go about this?

Phenomenal research by Dr. Jeremy Schmahmann, PhD., has shown how yoga and other healing movement disciplines such as chiropractic are vital for those striving to achieve total health. His work has shown that movement of the spine stimulates a part of the brain, the cerebellum, responsible for coordinating full body movement, thought, feelings, emotions and organ/ immune function.

Specialized receptors located in the joints of the spine, called proprioceptors, get fired when you move the spine, sending a message to the brain.

So what is a proprioceptor?  It is a nerve cell found in muscles, tendons and joint capsules which gives information concerning movements, position and alignment of the body. The highest concentration of proprioceptors in the body is in the spine, with the greatest amount being clustered in the upper cervical spine.

When a joint moves, the brain wants to know if the movement was healthy or not. This is huge when you realize that healthy movement of the spine is like ROCKET FUEL for your brain. All those sun salutations are doing just as much for your mind as they're doing for your body!

Now, when joints slam or jam into each other, proprioceptors don't fire.  Rather, noiceiceptors, or noxious stimulation receptors, get activated and the stress response is triggered.  Your fight or flight response is not triggered by a wooly mammoth or saber-toothed tiger, but by a stuck, jammed, or misaligned joint.  Believe it or not your jammed joints create the same physiological response as being put into a fight or flight situation. Your heart rate quickens, your cardiac output increases, there's a flood of adrenaline, cortisol, and insulin and a laundry list of other negative responses. That's all from a headstand or upward facing dog gone badly or hours slouched over a computer. Who knew?

Removing irritation or noxious stimulation from your spine with a dose of smooth, slow and steady movements will decrease your stress response and allow for a positive integration of your thoughts, feelings and emotions.

Yoga evolved from being a secluded meditative practice in which the yogi's asana arsenal consisted of a comfortable sitting pose, to a complicated system of movement and breath. The yogi's of old knew that if they could minimize the noxious/ noiciceptive input into and within the brain they would be able to decrease the stress response and go deeper into their meditative states. They somehow figured this out without expensive MRI's!

Healthy movement can exponentially improve your physiology and psychology just like Patanjali said. That's why yoga is supreme when it comes to exercising your muscles and your mind. It provides the brain with the most essential nutrient for survival....MOVEMENT OF THE SPINE!

With a peaceful mind and strong body, we are able to enjoy life to the fullest and evolve to greater heights.

If we can continue to evolve mentally, physically and spiritually, then maybe we can usher in a new revolution....THE WELLNESS REVOLUTION! A revolution based on attaining maximum health, healing and wholeness.

Chiropractic and Pregnancy

At no time in the human experience are there more vital developments than in the periods before, during and after pregnancy. The mother's physiological, psychological, and spiritual state can't be overstated enough in the process of that transforms 2 cells into a trillion of interweaving cells that will ultimate become a beautiful new baby. Being in an optimal "state of being" will allow the mother to be the best opportunity for a more comfortable pregnancy and give her new baby the essential ingredients required for an outstanding journey.

When caring for a pregnant woman, the Chiropractor has 2 main objectives, Structural and Neurological Integrity. The Structural component consists of symmetrical alignment (or as close to it as possible) and proper movement. The Neurological component consists of a free flow of nerve impulses, human electricity, or prana to all cells of the body without interference. Optimal Structural and Neurological integrity leads to an increase in global physiological & psychological health, which allows for a supreme internal environment for the mother, the growing baby, and the supportive partner.

Creating a more flexible body, especially the region of the spine and pelvis, is crucial for a successful pregnancy. By creating an outer body amour that is malleable is extremely helpful due to the amazing changes that will be occurring in the body. Ideally, the mother-to-be's spine should be subluxation-free before conception. A Subluxation is a term used to describe what happens when a spinal bone, or bones, misaligns and causes pressure or irritation to be placed on the nerve. This is detrimental to one's health process because the nervous system is the information super highway that allows for all communication and development to happen. That means all previous injuries should be "cleaned up"  before pregnancy...of course in an ideal world. That means weeks or months of adjustments to get the body moving without restriction and stabilized.

Once the spine is stabilized and holding its shape should the mother-to-be consider getting pregnant. With a freely moving spine the mother-to-be is able to handle the increase in 20-30 lbs that she will be carrying. This is a matter of gravity and biomechanics.

On a neurological level... the body works better with a healthy nerve supply. That means removing any irritation to the nervous system. The irritation can be in the form of traumas, toxins, and bad thoughts.  When enough stress builds up, the spine being the closet structure to the nervous system distorts, and contains the stress at that level.

The chiropractor's job is to create motion in the spine where the tension and distortion has developed, thereby taking pressure off the nerve tissue and allowing for proper nerve transmission. The job of the mother is to maintain that free and open pathway through a holistic body mind-training regimen.

With a healthy nerve flow to all the tissues of the body, the mother gives herself the greatest opportunity for wellness and vitality. When vitality exists, the environment for conception is ripe!

Once conception and implantation has occurred will the value of chiropractic reveal itself. The mother-to-be will usually experience range of fatigue due to the new physiological demands put forth by the new tissue. "Morning sickness" characterized by vomiting and nausea hypothesized to be caused by an increase in human chorionicgonadotropin produced by the placenta.

Since chiropractic is largely interested in the relationship between the spine and the main energy system, the nervous system, specific scientific chiropractic adjustments to the spine can help the mother overcome a decrease in energy levels.

As the pregnancy advances, breast tissue becomes larger as does the size of the belly. To help ease the changes in the biomechanics, in terms of weight distribution, specific scientific chiropractic adjustments to the distorted and misaligned spine will help the mother-to-be adapt to the increase in stress on her spine and body. The goal is to make the mother-to-be be as comfortable as possible and keep her emotions in check. By staying out of pain from jammed and compressed joints, emotional volatility and fatigue are reduced. This alone brings great harmony to the growing embryo and most importantly to the ultra-supportive husband!

Usually the lumbar spine, pubis and sacroiliac joints are the first to succumb to the increase in weight demands. As the abdominal region extends forward, the center of gravity changes and the mother-to-be is forced to make adaptative changes to her posture. By making sure the pelvis and sacrum are moving freely the mother-to-be will have more freedom to move. By having more freedom she is able to move more often and exercise based on her ability and comfort level.

Another vitally important reason for chiropractic care is due to in-utero constraints. After the 7th month, and throughout the final trimester, any position of the fetus other than a vertical head down position is considered to create constraint to the fetus and make it especially uncomfortable for the mother! The biomechanical constraints on the fetus and the potential for a more challenging labor, or even the need for heroic surgical procedures, all point toward chiropractic care as being not just helpful, but essential.

Birth is hard enough. Specific chiropractic adjustments allow the bones to move, the muscles to relax, and the nerve impulses to flow without interference. Conception, pregnancy, and delivery are a sacred time in one's life and Chiropractic honors this period. So try Chiropractic...chances are you'll move better, think better, and feel better!
